Welcome to STAG, the Smokeless Tobacco Action Group. STAG was formed in Australian in 1999 by disgruntled smokeless tobacco (ST) users who felt discriminated against and threatened by the governments constantly changing laws governing ST use.

Unfortunately both State and Federal Governments continue to single out ST users resulting in the membership of STAG steadily increasing over the years. It has been estimated that there are 20,000 ST users in Australia and STAG has become a prominent figure in what is a very active association.

With that in mind, STAG has the following goals.

1To educate governments and other Australians about the “Harm Reduction” benefits of ST for smokers who can’t drop the habit.

We believe that Government has an obligation to truthfully inform all smokers that there are countries like Sweden that have promoted ST as a safer alternative to smoking. Sweden now has the lowest cancer rate in men in Europe.

Numerous reputable researchers have demonstrated that ST (excluding Asian and Indian varieties) is up to 98% safer than cigarettes.

2To encourage the Australian Government to repeal legislation banning the sale of ST products. It is an offence to sell ST in Australia. It is however permissible to order from a tobacconist in the USA and to have them post ST to Australia for personnel use.

3For ST to be taxed fairly and in direct proportion to the health risk compared to smoking tobacco. At present ST is taxed at the same rate as smoking tobacco thereby discouraging people from using ST as a safer alternative.
